The past year has been beyond challenging, but one positive outcome has been the increased openness in discussing mental health issues. It is crucial to promote this dialogue without judgment or shame, as we now understand that it is ok to not be ok.. This has provided us with an opportunity to empathise with each other's struggles and recognise the importance of caring for our mental well-being alongside our physical health. As interior designers, we are part of this conversation and should actively participate in it.
What impact does this have on design? Is it time to shift away from aesthetics that are solely focused on trends that perhaps lack substance and significance?
For us, it involves creating environments that inspire joy and thoughtfulness as we move through them.
Imagine a space that encourages you to pause, breathe, and be present. How would you envision such a space? What elements would enhance this experience?
It is undeniable that nature has a profound impact on our mental state. The connection with nature, especially during walks or moments outdoors, has always been beneficial. Incorporating natural elements into design can help echo this connection and bring the outdoors inside.
Enter biophilic design. This design philosophy integrates natural elements into man-made spaces to provide comfort and joy. Embracing these principles is increasingly common in interior design, with studies showing that visual links to nature can enhance cognitive function and well-being. In workplaces, biophilic design can boost morale and productivity.
Beyond just adding plants, the strategic use of natural light and materials like wood, stone, and marble in calming tones is essential. Shapes inspired by nature are favored over angular or harsh designs.
Employers are also recognizing the importance of these principles and are transforming workspaces into open, fluid environments with comfortable furnishings and abundant greenery. Design choices, such as hexagonal floor tiles inspired by nature, aim to foster teamwork and productivity.
It is crucial for designers to prioritize emotional support in their work and ensure that this aspect is fundamental to their practice. Our understanding of human needs is evolving, and it is our duty to create environments that cater to this understanding.
